Burberry has become the latest fashion house to announce that it will be focusing its efforts and resources on fighting the coronavirus outbreak. Joining other labels such as Prada and Louis Vuitton doing their bit to combat COVID-19, Burberry has announced a series of measures it will be taking to support those affected by the virus and prevent further infection.

Not only will the British heritage brand be repurposing its Yorkshire trench coat factory to manufacture non-surgical masks and gowns for patients in UK hospitals, but it will also be using its global supply chain network to fast-track the delivery of 100,000 surgical masks to UK National Health Service medical staff.

Additionally, the label will be funding research for a COVID-19 vaccine developed by the University of Oxford, which will begin human trials next month. Professor Gavin Screaton, the university’s Head of Medical Sciences, commented: “Donations like this have a real and rapid impact, allowing us to be agile in our response, to accelerate this time-critical research.”

In an effort to help tackle food poverty, the brand will also be donating to food redistribution charities across the UK, including FareShare and The Felix Project, who are committed to feeding vulnerable people affected by the pandemic.

Marco Gobbetti, CEO of Burberry, said of these measures: “In challenging times, we must pull together. The whole team at Burberry is very proud to be able to support those who are working tirelessly to combat COVID-19, whether by treating patients, working to find a vaccine solution or helping provide food supplies to those in need at this time. COVID-19 has fundamentally changed our everyday lives, but we hope that the support we provide will go some way towards saving more lives, bringing the virus under control and helping our world recover from this devastating pandemic. Together, we will get through this.”
