Buckshot Princess: Arkansas Answer To Southern Gothic
The band talked virality, Possibly in Michigan, and rural influence.
Buckshot Princess is moving fast and now's the best time to start listening. After forming in April of 2023 they wasted no time writing songs and playing shows. They told us “Once we got started we put our foot on the gas,” and they really meant it, releasing their debut album in December of the same year.
They felt that the process of building an EP went so fast, “None of the songs were even finished until two weeks beforehand.” You'd never be able to tell, the album is tight. In part because the songs fit together perfectly, and in part because the sound the band has is so self-contained that any of their songs could be in the EP.
They attribute the uniqueness of their sound to their upbringing, “We're all from truly rural areas so I think the isolation we all had growing up gave us such a unique style.” This isolation from the mainstream allowed them to create songs that have captivated us, songs that stick with you in a way that is rarely experienced. It helps that they come from a place of sincerity, “All of us are truly music lovers.”
They are also film lovers, with their notability growing exponentially after covering a song from Possibly in Michigan. The film is a cult classic and adored by frontwoman Payton. She came across the director Cecelia Condit's work and recounted telling her band members, “You have to watch this shit!” They wanted to put their own twist on the song Animal Cannibal and, “make a spooky country song.”
They even got the approval of Condit herself. Which, they told us, “Meant everything to us that she liked it.”
There have been some downsides to virality. Some people have been leaving hate messages on the band's videos, especially the Animal Cannibal cover but they are handling the hate with grace. For drummer Ivey the hate is something positive, “I love it, I think it's awesome!” It's a sign that they are reaching a much bigger audience. With fame comes haters. We can't see what there is to hate though, we love their spooky country sound.
