If we’ve learned anything from the Black Lives Matter movement over the past few years (and especially the past week), it’s that supporting the black community in any way we can — big or small — plays a vital role in the fight for equality. In addition to fighting racism head-on by donating, signing petitions, and attending protests, we can also make the conscious effort to support black-owned businesses. 

We’re not putting up anymore with beauty brands who don’t bother with diverse shade ranges or who don’t see the importance of inclusivity in their campaigns. Now, it’s time to recognize and honor black creatives by supporting black-owned beauty brands, and we’ve put together a list of those to help you do just that. Sustainable looks different these days. We were invited recently to a fun project where we talked about the sustainability efforts of our brand, amongst a bunch of other companies. As I looked at their submissions I thought sh*t, sustainability takes cash money. 💰 When we go to packaging trade shows, most of the eco packaging requires 10’s to 100’s of thousands in units to order, a hefty upfront cost for a small business. And as we drafted up the launch of OUI the People, we had to quickly ditch some of the more buzzy packaging terms we could have launched with. Sugarcane, biodegradable, compostable, yada yada. We had to think against the proverbial grain 😁, which, we actually had fun with. But y’all, sustainability is more challenging and inaccessible than one might think. 🤷🏽‍♀️ So when we thought about it- against the grain (ahem), here’s what we did: Our razors are already 100% stainless steel, the most recycled material in the U.S., but you don’t need to worry about recycling them bc they aren’t meant to contribute to the 2 billion razors in landfills. The boxes they come in are recyclable, the outer shell is, and as of June the inner packaging will be as well. • • • • • • FEATHERWEIGHT is packaged in reusable and recyclable glass. • • • • • • SUGARCOAT is the first refillable shave gel on the market. We’re hustling on the refill packaging. Soon come! • • • • • • When you see us use transparent or white packaging, it’s because it’s generally the color that gets recycled the most. • • • • • • And finally, to that first line...sustainability looks different these days. As the coronavirus ravaged the economy and dreams of small business owners across the county, I think that sustainable for us in the coming years may also mean working with local and national small businesses to help them get back on their feet as well. It may not be biodegradable, compostable, yada yada, but it will always be beautiful, thoughtfully designed, and made to last.
