Black Excellence At The 2025 Grammy Awards
Beyoncé, Doechii, and Kendrick Lamar win big!
Music’s biggest night of the year has come and gone, but not without making history. On Feb. 2, all eyes were on the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, many eager to see who would take home the coveted gilded gramophone. And the show did not disappoint. Especially when it came to honoring Black excellence.
Rapper Doechii took home her first-ever Grammy during the ceremony. Her mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal won Best Rap Album, making Lauryn Hill, Cardi B, and now Doechii the only three women to ever win that category. During her acceptance speech, the Florida native stopped to say, “I know that there is some Black girl out there, so many Black women out there that are watching me right now, and I want to tell you: You can do it. Anything is possible!”
Rap titan Kendrick Lamar also had quite the night, taking home 5 out of the 7 awards he was nominated for. His beloved diss track “Not Like Us” scored big in the following categories: Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Rap Song, Best Rap Performance, and Best Music Video. Not to mention, it is now the most-awarded rap song in Grammys history.
But, arguably, the biggest win of the night went to none other than global superstar Beyoncé. Over the years, the “Formation” singer has been constantly snubbed in the Grammy's main categories, specifically for Album of the Year. But she finally earned one for Cowboy Carter, making her the first black woman in 26 years to take home an award in that category (before her, it was The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill by Lauryn Hill). Queen Bey also made history when she won Best Country Album, becoming the first Black artist ever to win this category.
