The Best Ways To Beat The Baldness Blues

When hair dips, use these tips.

POSTED BY LAUREN WATERS

Most of us (except maybe some extremely enlightened self-help experts) have physical insecurities. These days, many physical insecurities are getting easier and easier to battle. Cosmetic procedures ranging from fillers to going under the knife are more popular than ever. And, finding clothes, makeup, and hair and skincare that work for you are made easier all the time.

One common insecurity that many people still struggle with: baldness. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM,) more than half of all cis men over the age of 50 will be affected by some level of male pattern baldness. And, for some, it can start as early as your teens or twenties. Despite how common male pattern baldness is, there aren’t many methods for stopping it, and there’s no miracle cure. Luckily, if you, your partner or a loved one is starting to lose some of their once luscious locks, there are ways to combat hair loss. Here are our top 4 tips to share with any reluctantly balding guys in your life:

1. Embrace The Bald

If you’re insecure about hair loss, choosing to go bald faster may be the last thing you're considering. But, bald truly can be beautiful. If you or your partner is losing hair, now might be the time to grab those balding hair clippers and buzz it all off. Risk takers may go for the full, Common-inspired clean slate/ fully shaved head, while others can wade in a bit more slowly with a buzzcut à la David Beckham. Whatever your freshly-trimmed hair length of choice, give the bald life a test drive. You’ll be able to see how your head actually looks hairless (AKA rule out the egg head possibility,) and what you find may surprise you.

2. Stop Hair Loss In Its Tracks

While not many effective methods are available to actually halt hair loss, there is a way to stop your journey down the path to baldness. Finasteride For Hair Loss is a generic medication designed to stop hair thinning. It’s not an anti-baldness miracle cure; rather, it’s a prescription medication used to lower DHT levels (AKA the hormone responsible for hair loss) in your scalp, increasing hair growth and preventing further hair loss. According to NHS, Finasteride tablets are taken once a day, and it may take up to a year to see results. That said, over 80% of men who’ve tried Finasteride have seen hair loss stop within the first year. And, according to a 5-year medical study in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology Symposium Proceedings, 66% of men reported hair regrowth in 6 months to a year of taking Finasteride. If you’re considering Finasteride, talk to your doctor, and see if it’s right for you.

3. Redo Your ‘Do

A different haircut can do wonders for thinning hair. Just because your hair is getting thinner, doesn't mean you’re going to lose all of your hair anytime soon (or ever!) If thinner hair is what you’re battling, switching up to a different hairstyle can camouflage the places where your locks are lacking (and, don’t worry– we’re not talking about the Donald Trump look.) Ask your hairstylist to try a new cut that aims at making your hair look fuller and more voluminous.

4. De-stress

Stress can actually cause or exacerbate hair loss. If you feel that stress may be contributing to your shedding situation, introduce some new relaxation methods to your routine or try out a new therapist. Not only will your scalp calm down, but so will your mind, and that has plenty of benefits.

Like any physical insecurity, hair loss can affect our self esteem and confidence. Luckily, there are ways to keep baldness at bay, or you can always embrace your beautifully bald self.
