Little known to many, Berlin is among the top cities of the world with the best street style. If there is one intrinsic fashion city in Germany, it is undoubtedly Berlin! A youthful city,  full of universities, hosting people from different parts of the world. This has brought about a cosmopolitan atmosphere from the different influences meshed with Germany’s rich cultural heritage.

Street style in Berlin stems way back to the 1990s. The fusion of youth culture and Hip Hop music gave way to the famous street style. This fashion was easy-going and classy at the same time. The style quickly caught on in the neighbouring countries and also spread to other parts of the world. Don’t be surprised to find menswear stores in Berlin and Beirut with the same style!

Today, the style is much inspired by the sportswear industry. It’s no wonder that Germany is home to some of the big leagues’ brands when it comes to sportswear such as Adidas and Puma.

WHAT TO WEAR AND WHEN IN BERLIN

The most important fashion tip for winter, spring and fall in Berlin is to always dress in layers. Layering of clothing is done following a special technique. Thermal underwear is primarily worn as the base layer. Wool or synthetic material is recommended as it helps store warmth and repel perspiration. Long-sleeved tops make a good base while layering. Jackets with hoods and boots are not only stylish but keep you warm in the rain and strong winds.

The best time to visit Berlin is definitely during summer. The weather is hot and humid, perfect for the outdoors. During weekends and holidays, people flee the city for the nearby lakes and other water catchment areas to cool off. Heavy clothing is normally thrown to the kerb during summer and in come vests and shorts.

Berlin’s youth are not fans of bright and flashy colours. Most will be seen adorning black or shades of black clothing. If you are a tourist and want to look like a local, then keep off bright and shiny colours.

Don’t be surprised to find people walking along the streets of Berlin in pyjama-looking outfits. The lazy, laid back and undone look is rather popular in Berlin.

FANNY PACKS ARE STYLISH

Fanny packs are not for school going or for girls as they go on shopping sprees. Fanny packs are preferred by Berlin’s men and can be worn in a number of ways; at the back, at the front or as a cross-body bag.

Sneakers are a must-have for any trendy man in Berlin. They go practically with all outfits including suits! The street fashion of Berlin is characterized by sneakers and the fancier they are the better. Furthermore, it’s important to note, many of Berlin’s roads are paved with cobbles making it difficult to walk in pointed shoes. This has made the sneaker a fashion staple for men and has helped in the revolutionizing of a street style in the city.

Unlike other countries where showing off of brands is a ‘thing,’ Berliners don’t advocate for this. They will only invest in items where the brand name isn’t shown on the outer side of the clothing.
