Best 90s Movies That Defined Fashion Trends
And created looks that never go out of style.
The 90s were undeniably the golden era for rom-coms: 30 years later, these films still feel relatable. Rewatching them is my guilty pleasure. I enjoy the plots, atmosphere, simplicity, and, of course, the fashion of that time. 90s movie outfits have shaped my personal style, and I honestly couldn’t be happier about it, as I believe those trends were some of the best. And if you’re looking for outfit inspiration or just a cozy way to spend your evening, these are the movies you should definitely revisit.
Clueless (1995)
The movie follows Cher Horowitz, the most stylish girl in her school, who loves playing a matchmaker and controlling others’ lives until she realizes that her own isn’t as perfect as it seems. She may not be the easiest character to admire, but she definitely made us rethink our wardrobe, cementing her status as the ultimate icon of the preppy-chic aesthetic. And can we all agree that we were jealous of her digital closet? I know I still am.

Pretty Woman (1990)
When Edward Lewis hires Vivian Ward to accompany him to social events, he has to attend, the two unexpectedly develop real feelings despite coming from completely different backgrounds. It’s a heartwarming story showing how love can help people grow. Vivian’s wardrobe reflects her transformation perfectly, shifting from bold and edgy to refined and elegant. Not gonna lie, her glow-up was perhaps my favorite part of the film.

Poison Ivy (1992)
Lonely and introverted Sylvie Cooper finally finds a good friend in Ivy, someone she feels she can trust. That is, until her new companion’s real intentions begin to surface, revealing the truth. While Ivy isn’t exactly someone to root for, her style is impossible to ignore. Her grunge- and glam-inspired outfits felt rebellious, making her one of the most striking fashion figures of the decade.

Practical Magic (1998)
Who doesn’t love a good old movie about magic? Two sisters, who happen to be witches, try to live their normal—as much as it can be—life while trying to break the family curse that dooms every man they fall in love with. The Owens sisters instantly became a major fashion inspiration, blending elements of boho and vintage with a touch of 90s cozy charm. With the rise of whimsical style today, their looks feel more relevant than ever.

Notting Hill (1999)
A true gem of 90s rom-coms, this film tells the story of two people from different worlds who fall in love. Beyond the charming plot, it’s Julia Roberts's character, Anna, who stands out for her effortless style. Her wardrobe captures that effortless balance of polished and casual, embodying the understated minimalism of that era.

After watching the movies, you’ll probably feel inspired to lean into 90s fashion. If you’re ready to bring a bit of that aesthetic into your wardrobe, my FizzyPicks are a good place to start.
