Authentic Entrepreneurship: How Gen Z Mums are Redefining the Business World

How a mum generated a million-dollar turnover.

POSTED BY MARIANNE LEHIKOINEN

At the age of 20, I embarked on my entrepreneurial journey with a burning desire to create a life that aligns with my personal values and goals. I envisioned the freedom to work on my own terms and make decisions that best serve my business. However, it wasn't until the birth of my daughter when I was 24 that I truly found success, achieving a million-dollar turnover the following year.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have the unwavering support of my husband in raising our child. Still, being a mother and an entrepreneur can be a challenging balance. This experience has taught me the importance of setting boundaries and delegating tasks, which has ultimately led to the acceleration of my business. I am now blessed to lead a team of 15 individuals, and have even made the move to beautiful Portugal, where I am able to work from the beach.

Being a mother has truly changed the way I approach my business. It has taught me the importance of setting boundaries and prioritizing my time effectively. My daughter is my top priority and I have learned to balance my work and personal life in a way that allows me to be present for her while still growing my business. This shift has led to a more successful and fulfilling experience as an entrepreneur.

I now see motherhood as an asset - much like an adapted skill set - to have in business. It can accelerate your journey to becoming the entrepreneur Gen Z and beyond dream of - at a time when many people are setting out to live and define work on their own terms as content creators, solopreneurs, small business owners, or side hustlers.

Whether you are a parent or not, I have found that by implementing certain strategies, I have been able to successfully run my business while also being present for what is of top priority to me - in my case, my child.

Lean In On Your Support System A support system is crucial. Whether it's a partner, family, or friends, having people to lean on and share your struggles with can make a world of difference. I also have a Mastermind group, where I can share my ideas and get feedback from other entrepreneurs who are also balancing motherhood and business.

Significance Of Boundaries

One of the greatest lessons I have learned is the significance of setting boundaries in order to lead a harmonious life. By separating my work and personal time, I am able to fully focus on each task, resulting in increased productivity in my business and allowing me to be a more present mother. I strongly believe that my generation, Gen Z, has the power to set a new standard for work-life balance in the business world and to move away from the outdated expectation of being constantly of service.

Prioritizing Mental And Physical Well-Being

I also prioritize my mental and physical well-being. Taking care of yourself is essential for being able to take care of others, including your child. I make sure to take time for myself, whether it's through exercise, meditation, or simply taking a break. This has helped me to be more focused and energized when it comes to work and motherhood.

Delegation Of Tasks Another strategy that has been crucial for me is delegating tasks. As a business owner, it can be easy to try to do everything on your own, but this is not sustainable, especially when you have a child to take care of. By hiring an operations manager, I have been able to delegate day-to-day responsibilities, allowing me to focus on the bigger picture and be a more effective leader in my business.

Automation Of Tasks My generation is known for work efficiency through technology adaptation, and there are recent studies that show that we bring in the same amount of money than a millennial, but in a shorter time. How do we do that? Basically, for every repetitive task, we just know there must be an app that can take over through artificial intelligence. My Gen Z Operations Manager will find the most efficient ways to get the processes in my business.

Authenticity At my consulting company, we believe that every strategy our clients choose has the potential to be successful, and it is ultimately up to the entrepreneur to decide for the approach that aligns best with their authentic entrepreneurial journey.

Being a mother has taught me the importance of authenticity in business. As mothers, we have a unique perspective and approach to our work, as we have a deep understanding of the value of balancing time and priorities. This understanding allows us to be more genuine in our interactions with clients and colleagues, and to approach our business with a sense of purpose and intention. We understand the importance of creating a work-life balance that is sustainable and fulfilling for both ourselves and our families. This, in turn, allows us to be more authentic leaders and entrepreneurs, creating businesses that truly serve the needs of our clients and communities. As mothers, we are able to infuse our businesses with a sense of authenticity and purpose, making them truly meaningful and impactful.

In conclusion, Gen Z mothers are redefining the business world with their unique approach to entrepreneurship. By focusing on authenticity, efficiency, and delegation, mothers can achieve success on their own terms and build businesses that align with their values and goals as mothers. I believe that every woman can have it all, and I am passionate about helping mothers of all generations achieve their full potential in business and in life.
