Another Mistake From Hollywood
Major backlash as occurred surrounding the HBO Max release of The Witches remake.
What was expected to be a fantastic addition to 2020, has turned out to be exactly fitting with this shocking year.
It’s been 30 years since the famous book The Witches by Roald Dahl, had a film adaptation, which only built the excitement for this new movie. However, people were quick to notice the Grand High Witch (played by Anne Hathaway) had a limb difference.
Those familiar with The Witches story will know how evil and horrible looking the character is throughout the story. This becomes very problematic when a limb difference is used to empathises these traits. Fans, athletes and celebrities have come together in saying a limb difference does not make someone scary, evil or horrible. To which we can all agree.
The Twitter trend ‘#NotAWitch’ hopes to highlight the injustice and upset this new movie has caused. JJ Chalmers, a British TV presenter, said it was "a classic example of unconscious biases". Both Anne Hathaway and Warner Bros have apologised to audiences who are affected by the movie.
However, in a world that is becoming more and more inclusive, is a ‘sorry’ enough for the damage within society that this movie could have for those with limb differences?
