In 2011, a year since Instagram arrived and changed our lives forever, VSCO, a photo-sharing app which allows users to edit photos with filters (a lot like Insta) has recently become extremely popular with teenage girls.
If you don’t know already, 'VSCO girls' is a social media-based subculture which has arisen from popular apps such as Instagram, and more recently TikTok, which has seen many young girls buying particular clothing items and trendy accessories, to fit in with this popular style. This trend holds many similarities to what millennials may refer to as 'Tumblr girls', featuring picture-perfect bedrooms and outfits many dreamed of having throughout their teenage years. The hashtag ‘#vscogirl’ now has more than 1.2M posts on Instagram, so at this point is almost impossible that you won’t have accidentally stumbled across a photo or 2 on your explore page – think Urban Outfitters, pastels, Starbucks and scrunchies.
These girls are (usually) blonde, skinny, white girls who live a few moments away from the beach and seem to be almost definitely happier & more popular than anyone you know.
If you’re still unsure, Urban Dictionary has provided us all with an insightful definition: “The Tumblr girls of 2019, you’ll probably catch them wearing a scrunchie, tube top, puka shell necklace, white vans or Birkenstocks and don’t forget the Hydro Flask to finish off the look.”
The start of the trend has been rooted back to YouTuber Greer Jones – who appeared to be the first influencer to post about the trend, giving a rundown on what it takes to become the ‘ultimate VSCO girl’, but since has seen countless numbers of social media stars adopting the style and creating content surrounding it. Due to its rising popularity, the trend has also become the subject for countless viral internet memes and parody videos.
