Say Yes To ‘NO,’ A New Single By Amalie Bryde
She opens up to us about setting boundaries, celebration of identity and seeking validation.
Make a note of that name if you haven’t heard it yet. Amalie Bryde, Danish-born and London-based artist is a breath of fresh air on the current music scene. She blends jazz with neo-soul, rebels against social media, creates sustainable merchandise from recycled materials and breaks all conventions. Her newest single ‘NO,’ from the upcoming Debut-EP ‘Lay Down,’ has just come out.
As a fan of Nina Simone, Amalie wrote this song inspired by the icons’ performance at Ronnie Scotts in London. ‘She did this thing with the audience where she told them to repeat a word. It was so enchanting that I was immediately inspired to do something like that with a crowd,’ Amalie shared with Fizzy exclusively. ‘I’d been thinking about it for quite some time until one day, I came across this bassline where I layered over the ‘no’ chorus idea in a voice-note.’
Lyrically, the single describes the fight for your own voice. ‘To me, 'NO' means setting boundaries,’ revealed Amalie. She also admitted, ‘In September 2017, I realized I’d been lying to myself for years about seeking validation in order to survive and blend in. This was when I discovered that I was the only thing stopping me from pursuing my true calling.’
Since Amalie is a socially engaged artist, she also ‘couldn’t help but think about the horrors so many of our LGBT+ brothers and sisters have had to and continue to go through and experience every day.’ That’s why, both the song is ‘an anthem for anyone who's proud of whatever makes them different’ – the kind that should be scream from the rooftops.
Check the song and the video, described by Amalie as ‘a celebration about embracing your true self' here.
