Alexander Wang’s Latest Runway Show ‘COLLECTION 1 2020’ Lights Up New York
‘COLLECTION 1 2020’ explores unity and patriotism.
Alexander Wang’s ‘COLLECTION 1 2020’, staged at the prestigious Rockefeller Center, explored Wang’s roots, paying tribute to both his Chinese-American heritage and immigrant status. As debates on immigration have escalated over the years, particularly in America, Wang’s show makes a bold statement on unity. Coming as Wang celebrates 15 years on the catwalk, the show's aim was to pay tribute to classic American sportswear, while shaking up the expected.
The runway show was split into four acts and begun with business-like looks such as in the brand’s previous Fall/Winter 2018 show. Wang inverts the typical masculine shapes of business and sportswear and brought a feminine dimension to each outfit. Broad shoulder coats with a cinched waist, and with Kendall Jenner sporting a waist trainer while her all-white ensemble apparently an ode to the suffragette movement, each look explored feminine silhouettes with a nod to the American dream.
The event wasn’t the VIP only vibe seen at most high fashion shows; fashion fans could observe over the giant balconies above. Wang’s show clearly was an exploration of inclusivity that evidently comes from exploring his own roots.
The second part of the show saw influences from Calvin Klein, with inspired logo T-shirts but with AW instead of CK. This element of the show took underwear to outerwear as these were worn under slip dresses and cinched in waists were decorated with branded underwear waistbands.
Wang took the classic all-American vibe to the third portion of the show, with flashes of red seen on leather trousers and bucket hats. Oversized corduroy pants were worn with shirts with an extra pair of sleeves, exploring fashion trends through the ages while showing the importance of unity across time. Models wore pigtails weaved with leather, a modern take on innocence and childhood.
The show finished with an all-white ensemble, a tribute to the non-conformist women who have inspired Wang across his career. Models such as Binx Walton, Adesuwa Aighewi and Kaia Gerber wore sportswear pieces, repping the American flag and the words ‘New York’, honoring the brand’s roots and the host venue respectively. Kaia Gerber closed the show by walking on the LED runway lit up in red and white stripes, the ultimate American symbol.
