The first installment of Rihanna’s FENTY fashion label, Release 5-19, is now available online on fenty.com. Following a successful pop-up debut on May 24 in Paris, the highly-anticipated collection had its global release today with the launch of Maison’s digital flagship.
Release 5-19 establishes the attitude of FENTY through ready-to-wear pieces and accessories that reflect RiRi’s own personal style, character, and experiences. Expect sartorial statement staples in block color ensembles that execute cool streetwear looks in high-end styling.
Tailoring is a strong suit of the collection, evident in the boxy fits and wide shoulders of oversized jackets and corset dresses that cinch to define the waist. Such details in construction follow through to flowing pleated pants and button-down hoodies, creating a collection that complements the female physique and reveals the multi-hyphenate’s explorations into what modern womanhood can mean. Accessories come in the form of eyewear and shoes: iridescent shades with monogrammed tips and golden studs frame the face like a mask, while sharp strappy sandals finish off each look with a pointy powerful kick.
For Release 5-19, Rihanna pays homage to photographer Kwame Brathwaite, a fundamental figure of the Black is Beautiful movement in the 1960s and 1970s Harlem. Brathwaite’s black-and-white archival images are juxtaposed with ethereal portraits of FENTY-clad women and men, re-establishing dialogue between past and present in the spirit of diversity and strength.
Opting out of the traditional fashion schedule, the LVMH Maison will live online and operate via a “See-Now-Wear-Now” model. Special edition drops will be released throughout the year, with the next installment expected at the end of June.
