A Guide To Your Skincare Quaran(rou)tine

Here’s what your quarantine skin-care routine should look like!

POSTED BY LAURA JOHNSON

Most of us spent the entirety of 2019 building up extensive skin-care routines, investing in an array of expensive serums and spending an hour of our day applying layers, in the hopes of achieving Insta-worthy, glowy, baby-like skin. And now we are here, prisoners in our own homes (I’m being dramatic I know), skipping days (or weeks) of our routines. What a WASTE of all that hard work. Your skin needs you more now that ever. Get to that bathroom mirror pronto, there’s work to be done!

Changes to our environment and routines are one of the main causes of breakouts and all-round bad skin, so we’ve put together a basic routine for you to follow, catered specially for the COVID-19 lockdown.

Firstly, here’s a couple of good care practices to give your skin the best fighting chance, before you touch a single product:

• Avoid alcohol Pubs, bars and nightclubs may be currently closed, but this gorgeous weather is enough to tempt you to dip into your alcohol cupboard and pour yourself a Lil’ G&T. But we all know that alcohol consumption can lead to breakouts and harms our skin, so avoid over-indulgence where you can ladies!

• Keep outta’ the snack cupboard I dunno about you, but I can’t stop stuffing my face RN. The best tip I can give here is, remember how good your body feels when you fill it with the nutrients it deserves. The gym is canceled, and you might have ruled out that summer bod you were craving back on January 1st, but the best way to help your skin is to eat a healthy, balanced diet.

• Stop pulling your hair out! Stress levels are at an all-time high. This pandemic feels completely surreal and I keep hoping to wake up and find out this is a crazy fucking nightmare. But unfortunately, it ain't, and your anxieties surrounding COVID-19 are completely justifiable. Take time each day to decompress and partake in activities that are good for your mind, body and soul. Stress-induced breakouts are the WORST, so do your best to keep your mental health in check. We’re all in this together!

Your Quaran(rou)tine

#1 Cleanse

All skincare routines should start with cleansing. Just a quick wash with water is not enough and will play havoc with your complexion. It’s the equivalent to getting in the shower and thinking the water dripping down onto your legs is an adequate amount of cleaning for them. Bitch – you gotta’ cleanse. Think of cleansing as a deep clean for your skin, removing all the grime from the day and night. This step is essential even if you haven’t worn any make-up! We’ve been warned not to touch our faces to slow the spread of Coronavirus, and cleansing can be an extra step in ensuring anything bad on our faces are wiped away!

#2 Tone

I know it’s hard to keep to a full skincare routine, especially if your daily routine is as HUGE as mine, buttoning helps rebalance the skin and prepares skin to absorb any active acids used next.

The Ordinary recommends using their Glycolic Acid toner in the P.M, and to avoid direct sunlight after use (not too hard right now)!

#3 Exfoliate

Hopefully, we’ve all learned by now to avoid gritty exfoliators that tear apart your skin barrier and know that doing this shit correctly can work wonders for your skin. When skin is looking dull, rough and run down, the right product will transform it into that dreamy, bright, dewy skin you’ve always wanted! The changes in the environment we’re all experiencing right now are catalysts for inflamed pores and acne breakouts, and exfoliating prevents bacteria and sweat from building up under the surface of the skin.

#4 Antioxidant Serums

Antioxidant serums have been a recent addition to our everyday routines, and THANK GOD they exist, as they are the perfect product to fight against the chaotic schedules that we’re all living by right now.

Use Vitamin C in the A.M and P.M, to fight against poor air quality from being indoors and combat the inevitable dryness. Our skin is most absorbent between 12 am and 4 am, so make sure you layer up before bed!

#5 Moisturiser

The indoor air is SUPER dry, and your skin is more than likely suffering from not feeling the sun’s rays against it, so you need to invest in a moisturizer that keeps your precious skin healthy and hydrated. Luckily for you, this is much easier to do without any makeup on!

Steer clear from products packed with silicones, chemical screens, fragrances and try Drunk Elephants ‘Protini Polypeptide Cream’, which is full of amino acids and growth factors!

Shop it here for $69.61

#6 UV Protection

When you’re out in your garden or taking your daily allowance of exercise, or even if you're just sat in your house. It is important to still use sunscreen!

UV rays can penetrate through windows, so you need to be a prepared babe!

Shop it here for $103.80

On days you CBFA doing any work, be extra indulgent and try sheet masks, layer-up on the pink powder spot treatments and whack on some eye patches.

Take this extra time to invest in yourself and your skin girl, you won’t regret it! We need something good to come out of this, so it may as well be great skin!
