As the Met Gala draws nearer, excitement is building, especially with the recent announcement of this year’s dress code, “Tailored for You.” The official theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” was revealed back in October. 

The Theme: Honoring Black Dandyism

Inspired by guest curator Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity, this year’s theme celebrates the rich legacy of Black dandyism and its lasting influence on the fashion world.

 

Miller describes Black dandyism as “a strategy and a tool to rethink identity, to reimagine the self in a different context. To really push a boundary, especially during the time of enslavement, to really push a boundary on who and what counts as human,” as she told Vogue. 

 

Historically, Black dandyism emerged as a form of cultural resistance and self-expression. During times of oppression, fashion became a powerful tool for Black individuals to assert their identity and challenge societal norms. 

 

 

Today, it has influenced contemporary fashion, inspiring a new generation of designers and fashion icons who view Black dandyism as a way to redefine masculinity and challenge stereotypes. 

 

Think of Dapper Dan, who reimagined luxury fashion through a Black cultural aesthetic, or the late André Leon Talley, the renowned fashion editor who embodied the elegance and spirit of the Black Dandy.

Meet the 2025 Met Gala Co-Chairs

 

The 2025 Met Gala will be co-chaired by A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, and, of course, Anna Wintour, with LeBron James serving as honorary chair. Pharrell will return for his second time as co-chair and continues to shape the industry as the creative director of Louis Vuitton Men’s. 

 

Domingo’s bold and theatrical red-carpet style consistently pushes fashion boundaries, making him a perfect fit for the event. Meanwhile, Rocky has cemented his status as a style icon, known for his avant-garde approach to fashion. 

 

For Hamilton, this moment holds special significance. In 2021, he sponsored several young Black designers to attend the Met Gala, providing them with a platform to showcase their talents while underscoring the importance of inclusivity in the fashion world.

While the full guest list remains under wraps, the Metropolitan Museum of Art has confirmed an additional group of co-hosts, including Simone Biles, Ayo Edebiri, Usher, and Doechii. Their presence promises to bring a fresh and dynamic interpretation of this year’s theme. 

The dress code, “Tailored for You,” invites guests to explore the art of tailoring through a personalised and inclusive lens. While classic bespoke suits and precise cuts will likely feature as literal interpretations of the theme, the Met Gala’s legacy of bold fashion statements suggests we can expect more daring takes as well.
