Why I'm Ignoring Coco Chanel's Fashion Advice
Sometimes more accessories really are better.
Coco Chanel famously advised, "Before you leave the house, remove one accessory." I used to swear by that rule, convinced that less always looked more expensive. But somewhere along the way, my Pinterest feed convinced me otherwise. Chunky statement pieces are everywhere at the moment, from belts to bangle stacks, and I've found myself reaching for one more necklace, one more bracelet, or one more scarf before leaving the house. Over-accessorising is the way to take an outfit to the next level.
Especially with the popularity of a capsule wardrobe, influencers online seem to use accessories to turn one basic outfit into several inspired looks. This is what I love the most about this trend—the creativity and innovation it brings to fashion feel so fresh and exciting. Jewellery, bags, scarves, belts, and everything you could think of are showing up on social media everywhere, and it never gets boring.

I've noticed it's changed the way I get dressed, too. Instead of buying a completely new outfit, I'll usually reach for a statement bag or layer a few necklaces over a plain white T-shirt. Somehow, the whole outfit feels different without having to reinvent my wardrobe.
I'm obsessed with how transferable this trend is too. From beaded bags on holiday to layered scarves and sunglasses at a festival, accessories can be worn for any occasion, making this a trend for everyone.
With the return of vibrant colors and crazy patterns, maximalism is definitely the way to go, and accessories are a great way to jump on this trend without going too far out of your comfort zone. I used to save my boldest bags and chunky jewellery for birthdays or nights out because they felt like "too much." Now they're often the first thing I add to a simple jeans-and-T-shirt outfit. Everyone has a few necklaces lying around, or maybe a bag that's a bit out there and ended up reserved for special occasions. Take this trend as the push you need to wear more than one necklace at once, or finally carry that attention-grabbing bag on an ordinary Tuesday.

The way accessories are being used feels very reminiscent of playing dress-up as a child, layering all your favorite costume jewellery at once and just having fun with fashion. Maybe our childhood selves were right—our favorite accessories really are meant for everyday wear.
