When Did Sex Become Another Thing We Have To Be Good At?

Tracy’s Dog explores why better sex may begin when we stop trying to get everything right.

Have you ever faked an orgasm?

Or gotten a little louder, a little more enthusiastic than you actually felt, because you figured that was what your partner wanted?

Have you ever been halfway through sex and suddenly started thinking about your stomach? What does it look like from that angle? And your face. Is that really your sex face?

It takes a special kind of multitasking to have sex while mentally reviewing your own performance.

At some point, it’s reasonable to ask: are we having sex, or trying to put on the perfect performance?

We already have enough things to be good at. We meet deadlines, remember birthdays and add exclamation marks to perfectly normal emails so nobody thinks we’re angry. We’re expected to look put together and make it all seem fairly effortless.

You’d think getting naked would at least buy us a break.

Instead, the expectations follow us into bed. Look good, but don’t seem self-conscious. Know what you want, but don’t make it awkward. Be adventurous, confident and, ideally, easy to get off.

Even sexual confidence starts to sound like another thing we’re supposed to have mastered.

Of course it helps to know your body and say what you want. But that doesn’t mean you’ll know exactly what works every time, with every person. Sometimes “I’m still figuring that out” is the most honest answer available.

What felt great with one partner might feel different with another. At a different point in your life, you might want something you would never have considered before. Maybe your idea of good sex has changed since your last relationship. Maybe you’ve realized you’re into something you haven’t actually tried yet.

There’s going to be some trial and error.

Sometimes you need a different pace. Sometimes a promising position turns out to require better balance than either of you has. You stop, untangle a leg and try again. The mood will probably survive.

And sex doesn’t have to end in a spectacular orgasm every time to be worth having. Your pleasure matters. A partner should care whether you’re enjoying yourself. But wanting to come is different from feeling you have to fake it so someone else can feel accomplished.

An orgasm shouldn’t be something you produce to prove everybody did a good job.

For intimacy brand Tracy’s Dog, getting back in touch with what you actually want is the point of reconnection, the idea behind its 2026 brand evolution.

Its belief in “Pleasure without Performance” addresses that pressure to get sex right. Pleasure doesn’t have to be loud or look a certain way. Taking a while to figure out what feels good doesn’t mean you’re bad at sex. Neither does changing your mind halfway through.

The same goes for time spent alone.

A vibrator has no opinion on how sexy you look. It won’t take it personally if you change the setting. Try a different rhythm, go back to the one you liked or stop because you’ve had enough. Nobody’s feelings need protecting.

Without that extra concern, it’s easier to notice your own reactions. Maybe you like gentler stimulation than you expected. Maybe your usual setting isn’t doing much for you tonight. You can adjust without pretending the first thing you tried was incredible.

And there doesn’t have to be a major discovery involved. Sometimes you just feel like using your vibrator. That’s a good enough reason.

With a partner, there should be room for the same honesty. “A little faster.” “Keep doing that.” “Can we try something else?” These are useful things to say during sex. They don’t need an apology, and wanting something different now doesn’t mean you gave the wrong instructions five minutes ago.

So the next time you catch yourself worrying about your face, see if you can turn your attention back to what’s happening below it.

Does this feel good? Would you like more of it? Something different?

Take a moment. Say what you need to say.

You don’t have to be an expert to have a good time.
