We Interview Ace Tee On Feminism, Self Love and Future Plans
"It is an endless journey and I think that is beautiful."
As one of the most known rappers of Hamburg, Germany, the 26-year young Ace Tee made it over the Atlantic and attacked the Charts with her 2016 hit 'Bist du down?'. Overnight she achieved huge success as a German native singer, something only artists like Nena and Rammstein managed to achieve before. She proved that good Rap can come from anywhere and doesn't have to be in English. Showing the world that there is much more in Germany than good beer and pretzels, Ace Tee even made it in the US Vogue and designed a clothing line for H&M. She now explores the fashion world further with a fresh Bershka collab — we talked with Ace Tee about her upcoming projects, her future, and her fashion.
First of all belated Happy Birthday!
Oh, thank you.
We are impatiently waiting for new music, after your last single and guest contribution in 2018. What is next?
Actually, I have been doing music for the last two years and it will all be released within the next time. Also, I worked with several artists but I try to keep it as a secret. But a lot of singles and albums are going to be released.
What or Who inspired you?
The Street, my environment, and for sure my own life, it is really real.
What was your reaction like when you were told your song is breaking into international charts?
Well, I was shocked. I mean how should you react? The love that I get is so pure and that's like a big thank you for myself. We, the community in Hamburg, stand for the song ('Bist du down?') and I think that is also a good feeling, to give something to the Hamburg people.
Can you picture yourself being a role model for a younger generation?
Yes, for sure! I am definitely ready for being a role model. I want to be a role model, that's why I could never live a typically Rapper-life.
You say 'Schluss mit Selbsthass' (engl. 'Stop self-hate') in your song 'Bist du down?'. How important is self-love for yourself?
Pretty important, because it's something that you easily forget. It's something that you have to find again. It's not as if you have to love yourself all the time but it is also pretty good to sometimes tell your inner self, that you are destroying it right now and you should recognize it. What I wanted to say with the line is that you don't need to (hate yourself), you can also do something good for you.
Do you any tips for those who it is not that easy to love themselves?
To try it every day a little bit more and to listen to your inner voice. And don't to go on social media. Memes destroy people. You have to give therapy to yourself. In the end do something that is good for your soul or your body, something that fills you with happiness.
A pretty relevant topic right now is female empowerment. Do you see yourself as a feminist?
I think that is a tough theme. For some people it means nudity. For some people it means family and to stick to the traditional image of a woman. For the other it means equality. In all of these points, I see something positive but I have the feeling that people just scream and nothing ever happens. In my opinion, it also has to affect something. I just support the women in my circle of friends. Everybody has their own ways of expressing their opinion and if some people prefer to show their nipples, it is okay for me! In my opinion, you should first of all start with being supportive of each other.
As MEDUZV you used to also do English music — now German again. Would you do English music again, if your international success is secured?
I have several collaborations with people worldwide and they will be released soon. So, yes I would.
Your music has not always been that soft and 90s-girl-vibes. How did it change?
There are so many things and phases that you live through. I always have a vision of what I want to create and at that time, that was my vision. I still like, what I used to do but I changed and developed a lot since then. MEDUZV ist just a name, but 'Ace Tee' is me. 'Tee' comes from 'Tarin' (her legal first name) and 'Ace' means wonderful and magnificent.
So you do you feel like you arrived in your style?
In my musical-being, I feel like I am one step ahead, but I also know that I will never truly settle with a style because it's an endless journey and I think that is beautiful.
Most recently you announced your collaboration with Bershka. What was your personal highlight of the collection?
The T-Shirts are very nice for sure. And the Bershka people are super nice too!
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
With 5,6 or 7 albums. With a family, house, traveling, tours. But the most important, I think, is family, I think so.
Are there any festivals that you really badly want to be an act at?
I am mad about the US. That would be sick! Or 'Wire' in Britain, because the German music needs to go more international, so we need to wrap Germany into something cool.
Thank you so much for talking to us!
Thank you, too.
