Sultry, Sexy & Sophisticated. The Return of Hot Goth and Why We Should Care.

Saying that fashion is simply a way of a person showing self expression or the creativity they are embracing for the day is too much of an understatement. Fashion and the way one presents themselves, showcases who they are as a person and indulges the world on the secrets of what it’s like to possibly walk in their shoes. The cyclic manner of fashion itself, can have everyone braced with an out with the old, in with the new attitude when it comes to giving their wardrobe a wake up call. 2021 has us all spinning in circles trying to keep up with the latest  trends and the constant roar of the Y2K lifestyle. Quite polar opposite from the Y2K clothing craze, the return of hot goth fashion has everyone utterly captivated by the mysterious sultry edge of what it is to truly capture the essence of goth fashion.

Hats can be  tipped and kisses can be blown to the fashion powerhouse that is Balenciaga, for bringing our attention to this dark return, in their newest fall and winter 2021 collections. Creative director of Balenciaga, Demna Gvasalia once said “Fashion to me is a mirror, a reflection of what’s going on around us. This is manifested in the collections. Daily life is what speaks to people, everyday life. They are Balenciaga archives transposed from the 1950s to today, adapted to 2018, 2019, to the future.” The genius mind and artistic abilities that ooze from Gvasalia, seem to manifest into the collections, this one particularly.  The winter collection lookbook had models standing stiff, cushioned in the newest trends. A background of famous landmarks gave an interesting spin to the overall vibe of the pictures, one model even featuring a gothic version of Princess Diana’s wedding dress. A luxurious full length ball gown, with a balloon-sleeve coat, embellished with a dainty lace finish. In regards to the dress, Gvasalia told Vogue “So, if you’ve ever wanted to feel like royalty with an edge, this coat is for you.” Is it too cliche to say this edgy style is fit for a princess?

Not all the credit can be handed to Balenciaga for the return of hot goth fashion, we must also acknowledge other major fashion labels for bringing on the grotesque wave these current fashion fads. Let’s give credit where credit is due and that is to our Parisian love, Chanel. Goth energy was implemented into Chanel’s Spring 2021 runway, with models giving us sultury, smokey eyes for days. Not a brow out of place complimented by pale, rosy lips gave models the certain look needed to accessorize the clothes. A halfhearted energy was reciprocated, as the goal was to be a “I really can’t be bothered”--attitude, which was successfully executed by the hair and makeup team. Define what it’s like to possibly walk in your shoes with fashion. Are you a goth princess, a sun-covered beach goddess or perhaps an unstoppable athlete. Break barriers down and embrace individuality through clothing. Are you rebellious enough to indulge in the return of hot goth fashion?
