Matiere Premiere just dropped a deeper, moodier take on its cult-favorite Vanilla Powder — meet Vanilla Powder Extrait. Perfumer Aurélien Guichard takes the already dark, salty Madagascar Vanilla Absolute and turns the volume way up with higher concentration, extra intensity, and a guest star: Tonka Bean Absolute from Venezuela. The result? A vanilla that isn’t sticky-sweet but textured, powdery, and borderline addictive. Think “a dark vanilla bean painted white” — Guichard’s own words.
The Craft of Contrast
To get there, the tonka beans are ground into powder before becoming an absolute, bringing a natural, powdery warmth that melts into the vanilla’s supple richness. The beans themselves are grown for nearly 18 months between Madagascar’s jungle and coastline, on Fair for Life certified land — terroir, people, and process all stitched into the scent. With Vanilla Powder Extrait, Guichard leans into what he calls “olfactive richness and edginess,” crafting a fragrance that’s plush, modern, and quietly bold — like slipping into velvet at midnight.
