The Secret To Why Young People Are Finding It Harder And Harder To Save Money

And no, it’s not just because of the avocados…

Living your best life is something we’ve heard over and over again, but a recent Bankrate study has shown that maybe it’s costing us a little more than what we thought.

Whilst we know the key to our happiness and hearts is definitely through our stomachs, this generation might be overdoing it just a little too much, as the study shows that we eat out or order food in an average of five times a week.

Although we’re in no way blaming eating out for the cause of us not being able to afford a house, it might be one of the causes of not being able to save as much money (alongside the fact that budgeting still isn’t taught into schools *angry face*).
It’s hard to say no to a cheeky takeaway with the rise of platforms like Deliveroo and Uber Eats, where ramen’s only 10 minutes away with a simple click of your fingers.

But this also explains where some of our money is ending up. Take-aways and delivery services are getting more expensive, and are becoming less of a luxury and more of a habit, which might start to be a problem.
The other cause of our weak bank accounts is the experiences we’re spending our money on. More than half of millennials go to a bar, at least once a week, because chilling at home with a cup of tea just isn’t the same.

We’re also more aware of the quality of our food – and willing to pay higher prices. This means getting your hands on avocados when they’re not necessarily in season, but just so you don’t have to miss out on an Instagram-worthy Sunday brunch.

Our parents maybe didn’t have all the choice we did, especially with the rise of alternative vegan and gluten-free options, but they also didn’t spend over $10 on a green-juice to replace lunch.
For some of us, this might not actually be that much of a problem. Why save money when you could spend it on a happy tummy? But for those of us trying to save, and not actually getting anywhere, the answer might be on our plates.
