The Academy Awards announced their nominations on February 8th 2022.
The Oscars are arguably the biggest night in the Hollywood calendar, but the announcement of their nominees often brings about just as much conversation as the night itself. The Academy Awards have become almost infamous for their snubs and debates surrounding its nominees always cause a stir within the cinematic community and this year is no exception.
The nominees for the 94th Academy Awards are being led by The Power of the Dogs with a total of 12 nominations including Best Picture and benedict Cumberbatch’s nomination for Best Actor. This is closely followed by Denis Villeneuve’s Dune which has a total of ten nominations. A nomination that has been widely celebrated is the announcement that Kristen Stewart is up for her first-ever Oscar for her role of Princess Diana in Spencer which has also generated a lot of Twilight memes online. However, many have found a point of contention in her nomination over Lady Gaga in House of Gucci. Little Monsters have expressed their fury at the rebuff highlighting Gaga’s near-EGOT status, the star is only missing a Tony nomination, as evidence of her talents. However, others are highlighting the importance of Stewart’s nomination as an actress who is openly a member of the LGBTQ+ community.
