The Boom of Addison Rae
She’s just living *that* life.
Months go by and all we hear is Addison Rae. From her highly acclaimed collaboration with club classic sensation Charli XCX on the Von Dutch remix – where Rae actually shouts in an iconic scream queen – to the dreamy, cool Aquamarine video clip with its catchy dance-pop rhythm, Addison Rae is a star in the making.
Her Rise to Stardom
She first burst onto the cultural scene in 2019 dancing and making videos on TikTok, but really entered the mainstream lexicon in a locked-down world with a reliance on the app. In 2021, she launched her debut song Obsessed, and in 2023 an album, AR, a 2010s girly pop EP which would lead her to be dubbed by the internet as the legit pop savior.
A Multi-Talented Icon
From TikTok to the music charts, Rae also made it to Hollywood, starring in He's All That in 2021, a remake of the 1999 rom-com She's All That and Thanksgiving in 2023. There's a multidisciplinarity in it all that pulls one in even more. ''I want to do everything at least twice,'' Rae told Mel Ottenberg, editor-in-chief of Interview Magazine. And she did.
By 2024, with two movies and now more than two songs, her status as a pop princess was pretty much cemented. Her August release Diet Pepsi topped the Billboard Hot 100, followed closely by her single Aquamarine. Then, she is a Grammy nominee for Best Remixed Recording with her and Charli XCX's Von Dutch A.G. Cook remix.
But it's not just her versatility and dance-pop hits that make her so now. With a personal style that is even more eclectic, the musician has also become a fashion icon in her own right – Australian singer Troye Sivan even dressed up as Rae for Halloween when she was seen reading Britney Spears' book ''The Woman in Me'' wearing a Libra tee and a mini skirt.
Defying current trends and always daring on red carpets, she's quite the newest internet It Girl. From casually walking around Los Angeles with looks to die for – like a graphic shirt that read "Lady Fucking Gaga" or a Madonna sweatshirt with red Adidas shorts – to various risk-taking red carpet moments, like at the 2024 MTV VMAs in whimsical lingerie and a tutu by Miss Claire Sullivan styled by Dara Allen – the fashion mastermind of New York City–, she's been said to have a pop diva wardrobe along a defiant energy. She has both. And perhaps, underneath it all, she has even more.
