The Academy Reveals Invitee List More Diverse Than Ever
Finally some recognition of women and POC
After years of criticism, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed its full list of invitees which is more diverse than ever before. With 842 new members from 59 different countries, the list breaks boundaries, with 50% women and 29% people of color.
Invitees include big names like Lady Gaga, Gemma Chan, Letitia Wright and Adele, 21 being Oscar winner and 82 nominees. In 10 of the 17 categories, more women than men were invited, this is never been seen before and comes after major criticism at the lack of diversity at the Oscars. 2015 was the most notable year for a lack of diversity, so much so the #OscarsSoWhite movement was born. In response to these criticisms, Oscars president Cheryl Boone Issacs promised the organization will double women and POC by 2020.
We can certainly see improvement; the overall percentage of female membership has increased from 25% to 32% and membership for people of color has doubled from 8% to 16%. There is still much more to be done, but hopefully by 2020 major moves towards equality within this industry will be achieved.
