Summer is the time when you want to spend time outdoors and enjoy seasonal foods; however, when the temperatures rise, the way you look after your health needs to change. You need to make sure you are staying healthy through the summer months. It’s all about nourishing your body, looking after your skin, and looking after your mind.

Let’s have a look at three tips that will help you stay healthy physically and mentally this summer:

Eating Well

It can be far too easy to overindulge in all the tasty summer foods. Especially when the BBQs are on and the alcohol is flowing; however, it is essential that you are still eating a well-balanced diet and fueling your body properly. You need to maintain your energy levels and stay hydrated. Sometimes, the heat can suppress your appetite. However, it is still important to fuel your body.

Find some light, refreshing meals that are high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.  These will all help to keep you energized throughout the day, even if you don’t eat much because it’s too hot.

Summer is the perfect time of the year to eat hydrating foods like cucumbers, watermelons, and berries. These have two great aspects: they fill you up and hydrate you. This is even more important when you are living in hot weather. Don’t forget to include water in your diet, too. You should have at least eight glasses of water each day, and more if the weather is hot.

Looking After Mental Health

Physical exercise can be great for reducing stress as well as your physical health, but at times, you need to find ways to stimulate your brain without working out in the heat. During the summer months, you may feel extra stressed, so you need to spend some time each day unwinding and looking after your mind. Including activities like deep breathing and engaging in mentally stimulating activities like sudoku can help to keep your mind active and provide you with a way to get a mental workout without needing to be in the sun.

Protection From The Sun

You must protect yourself from the sun during the summer. Yes, it can be nice to get a tan and some vitamin D; however, you need to make sure you are taking proper precautions. Too much sun can lead to premature aging, increased risks of skin cancer, and sunburn. You need to make sure you are wearing sunscreen that protects you from UVB and UVA rays and apply it every two hours. If you are swimming or sweating, this may need to be done more often.

In addition to this, you should also make sure you wear hats and sunglasses. You may also want to consider wearing other cover-ups if you are spending the whole day next to the pool or on the beach.

Finally

Staying healthy in the summertime is simple if you stick to the tips above. It’s definitely a season to enjoy. Just make sure you are thinking about your health, too.
