Stranger Things Shows Us Everything Cool About The 80s Style
From double denim to scrunchies- 80s fashion will always remain timeless.
Now that the final season of Stranger Things is finally here (yes, I’m emotionally unstable about it), I’ve been spiralling over how iconic ’80s fashion really was. Stranger Things is pure nostalgia for a time I've never even lived. The music, the culture, and, as someone with a fashion eye, the style! It was big, bold, and just a little magical. It almost has me wanting to grab a Walkman, throw on an oversized biker jacket, and hop on a neon bike around Hawkins Indianna (the one without the Demogorgons, of course).
Oversized Everything
The people of Hawkins taught us that oversized clothes aren't just comfortable- they're a whole attitude. Big sweatshirts that swallow you up, a denim jacket roomy enough to fit two people, and plaid shirts that look five sizes too big – the ultimate blend of comfy yet cool. I may look like Steve Harrington in my oversized denim two-piece, but I can't lie; I feel effortlessly cool every time I wear it.
There's just something about a slouchy fit that gives an effortless vibe, like "I just rolled out of bed and threw this on".
Bold Prints
One thing I noticed about Stranger Things, and the 80s in general, was the bold prints and bright colors. The people dressed loud in the best way possible. Neon? Perfect for Saturday night roller-skating. Stripes with geometric shapes? Stunning. Clashing colors? Honestly, why not?
Stranger Things and the 80s fashion rekindled that part of me that isn't afraid to wear something bold.
The Power of Hair and Accessories
The 80s understood accessories on a spiritual level.
Scrunchies, chunky-frilly socks, colorful hair clips, and big, messy updos and curls; it's the tiny details that make a huge difference. In the past few years, I've started to add these small accents to my outfits. A scrunchie here, retro sunglasses there, it's crazy how much these little accessories can shift your mood. I hope Eleven would approve!
Why it Still Feels Cool?
80s-inspired fashion translates so easily into modern style. The layered shirts, varsities, retro accessories-all things I still wear to this day. Maybe it's the confidence? Maybe it's the way the decade didn't take itself too seriously? I don't know. But one thing I am sure of is that the 80s remind us that fashion is supposed to be fun and a little extra. And Stranger Things exemplified exactly this!
So yes, we will continue to dress as we've just stepped into Hawkins!
I’ve selected my FizzyPicks below — all the oversized, neon, and retro pieces that make dressing like you’re in Hawkins feel way too easy.
