Saving The Planet One Vegan At a Time

Is a Plant-based Diet Better For The Environment?

POSTED BY ALEXIA EVANS

The answer is yes! Obtaining a vegan diet can reduce your carbon footprint by up to 73%.

While there is little control we have over the global issue of climate change, we can all try do our bit to create a better planet. What if there was one lifestyle habit you could change to considerably help? Swapping to a vegan diet is the single best way to reduce our carbon footprint.

The truth is, it’s easier now more than ever to become vegan. Ten years ago, not many people knew a vegan and there wasn’t even suitable food sold in main supermarkets. Today, there are endless recipes and advice free online at the click of a mouse.

Don’t get me wrong, going vegan is a challenge and if you want to ease into it, the best way to start is by reducing your beef consumption.

Red meat requires 11 times more greenhouse gases than potatoes, wheat and rice. One steak takes 7,500 litres of water to produce. Not only do cows release huge amounts of methane into the environment, but they also require extensive areas of land. As a result of this, colossal amounts of the Amazon rainforest have now been burnt to farm cows for meat. I could go on and on!

Besides the environmental impacts, there are also many other benefits. Think about how sluggish you feel after consuming a Big Mac meal, then compare it to a vegetable rich meal you had where you felt energised. This is because plant-based lifestyles give us the right nutrients to power you through our day. And yes, this also means heavy weight lifting!

No one wants to see our beautiful planet suffering as much as it is. You only have to look at the Climate Clock in New York to shiver at the thought of how much impact we are having. With such an easy lifestyle switch out, we will all regret not giving it a go.
