Natural And Long Eyelashes How Can I Achieve That?

Goodbye Mascara, Hello lashes.

POSTED BY GUEST WRITER

Eyes are the key to our souls. It’s no wonder why so many women desire lush, long lashes, but still want them to look natural. It’s not an easy task. However, you can most definitely achieve it, trust us! Luckily, there are a number of easy ways you can achieve longer and thicker lashes, even just by using classic solutions like an eyelash curler and a lil swipe of mascara.

Many of us invest in high quality (and often quite pricy) mascaras, with cosmetic companies offering alternatives such as strip lashes or tufts. Unfortunately, all this fiddling with our lashes can cause them to weaken. Mascara, eyelash curlers, eyelash glue and false lashes can all make our natural lashes lose their lustre, elasticity and volume. So, what can we do to improve their appearance?

Gentle Make Up Removal

If there’s one thing that strongly aggravates our lashes, it’s the way in which we remove our eye make up. Although certain gels, foams and poor quality cosmetics can cause irritation (especially if you have sensitive skin), intensive rubbing of the lashes can damage them, causing them to fall out much more often than they should.

To effectively remove make-up whilst caring for your lashes, apply the remover product to the cotton pad and place it on your eyelid. Holding it in place for a moment or two will dissolve the make up and make it easier to remove with gentle swiping motions, whilst minimising damage to your lashes. This method also prevents the stretching of the delicate skin around the eye area, helping us keep wrinkles at bay for as long as possible.

Natural Methods

Way before we were even born, our nans and grandmas were embodying DIY goddesses and finding their own low-cost ways to improve the appearance of their lashes.

One of the most popular ways to naturally improve lashes is through the use of castor oil. Cheap and highly effective, castor oil is made up of numerous fatty acids, as well as vitamins A and E. Castor oil lengthens, thickens and nourishes the structure of the lashes whilst encouraging faster regeneration. The result is strong, long, and flexible lashes.

In addition to castor oil, hyaluronic acid (please don’t DIY this one, check out Glossier and The Ordinary’s acid products) can also benefit the health of our lashes, by providing adequate hydration for individual hairs. Glycoproteins can also help by stimulating hair follicles, whilst Biotin strengthens the hairs, making them less susceptible to damage.

Panthenol, an ingredient found in many eyelash conditioners, increases the elasticity of our lashes and renews their structure. Numerous plant extracts also have an amazing effect on our lashes, as many have antioxidant and regenerative properties.

What should you look for in an eyelash conditioner?

If you’re not the biggest fan of natural oils, try out an eyelash serum. Bimatoprost, the main ingredient in lash serums, is an active substance and derivative of hormones, boasting proven lengthening properties and lash growth. Serums can also include panthenol and allantoin, offering a soothing effect.

The key to using these kinds of cosmetics is regularity and patience. The first effects can be seen after 2-3 weeks, with your average serum bottle lasting around 6 weeks, depending on how much you use. To maintain the effects, manufacturers recommend continued use of the products, but at a lower frequency.

All of these methods improve the appearance of lashes in time, and let’s face it: lashes are an integral part of our make-up routine. Delicate removal, specialized lash care products and (most importantly) patience, will help you achieve the dreamy effect of healthy and long eyelashes. You got this!
