Despite some common misconceptions, the role of women as a whole in India’s workforce is quite high, although still lower than that of men. Like in many countries, there is a set of jobs in India that women tend to find themselves doing more so than others, although they’re possibly not what you think.

For example, 5.1% of all working women in India have jobs in the construction industry, more than double that of working women in the UK. 68.5% of India’s women work in farming, whilst just 46.6% of men do similar jobs. 8.6% of the UK’s working women have jobs in healthcare, whilst in India it is only 1.1%.

Despite these stereotype-smashing statistics, one area of India’s economy that lacks women is entrepreneurship, with just 14% of businesses in the country run by females.

However, these statistics haven’t put Muskan Sethi off from launching herself through the glass ceiling. She believes that there is not a single industry where women can’t dominate, and she’s definitely leading by example.

After a few attempts in more traditional careers, as well as attending the London College of Fashion, Sethi has become a professional poker player, which has seen her secure an all-expenses paid trip to Barcelona for the European Poker Tour after beating 700,000 players through rounds of auditions and interviews. Following this she travelled the world playing poker, competing in destinations including Prague, Las Vegas, Nottingham and Amsterdam.

Muskan Sethi has become a role model for women and girls in India, in addition to her professional poker career she is a successful entrepreneur in her own right. Recently named a PokerStars Ambassador for the platform’s Indian market, she is also the founder of Doggydoo, an innovative app for dog lovers.

Sethi’s career began when she started playing poker on Facebook for fun, whilst also watching it on TV with her father. She quickly began playing online and her career took off. Despite this, she found herself suffering discrimination from fellow online players who would tell her to return to the kitchen, but that didn’t put her off her game.

In addition to playing poker and being an all-round pioneer, Sethi supports social causes. In particular, she has been donating her poker winnings to a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) that was started by her late mother, which supports disadvantaged people in India.

Throughout her career as a poker player she has been consistently recognised for her successes, including being picked as a “rising star” by the Global Poker League. Off the back of this, she became the leader of the “Delhi Diehards” and is now ranked the number 1 player in India.

Perhaps the highlight of her career so far has been being honoured by Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India, as part of a celebration of 112 successful women in the country. The event selected women, like Sethi, who have fought hard to stand out in professions that are generally dominated by men. Alongside her at the ceremony were numerous entrepreneurs, scientists, artists and musicians, with Sethi being the only professional poker player.

Muskan Sethi is a true role model for women, both in India and all across the world. She has worked tirelessly to fight against the odds to succeed in an arena dominated by men, whilst simultaneously pioneering professional poker playing in her native country.
