There's An IRL Petition To Swap Confederate Statue For Missy Elliott
“Together we can put white supremacy down, flip it and reverse it.”
After the abhorrent neo-Nazi march in Charlottesville, some US cities have been working to remove their Confederate statues, believed by many to intrinsically celebrate a violent, racist history. In Portsmouth, Virginia, however, thousands of people are petitioning to destroy a Confederate monument and replace it with cultural icon and “true Portsmouth native hero,” Missy Elliott.
“Who better to encapsulate the culture and spirit of the city enshrined in a new monument than Grammy Award winning rapper, dancer, and record producer Missy ‘Misdemeanor’ Elliott,” the petition’s creator, Nathan Coflin, writes. “Together we can put white supremacy down, flip it and reverse it.” “Missy is all of us,” he continues. “Everything the Confederacy was not.”
The petition for the statue in the Olde Towne area of Portsmouth has hit nearly 22 thousand signatures – just over 3000 short of its goal – and has already been handed over to the mayor. You go, Nathan!
