MIA Official Documentary Trailer Release
Oprah called her a terrorist, we call her a female rapper.
Steven Loveridge captures the epic story of refugee of the Sri Lankan Civil War to internationally recognized rapper in MATANGI/MAYA/MIA. Having won World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award at Sundance and showcasing at New Directors/New Films at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, as well as the Berlin International Film Festival; the documentary features 22 years of unseen footage from the Paper Planes hit maker.
Back in 2013, a pirate trailer was leaked, but Loveridges film being released in September of this year is believed to have changed dramatically since the first cuts. Regardless, this film is a story of rising above situations and not forgetting your roots. M.I.A was a threat to Americanism when she was restricted from entering the country due to her debut album and her activism for Tamil, Palestinian and African Americans people; which also earned her the title of Terrorist by Oprah. One persons terrorist is another’s freedom fighter. Unapologetic of her values and views of society, M.I.A is the female rapper brand we wish would re-emerge. Her music is a raw slap in the face of the struggles felt by many displaced people having survived man made wars and occupations of their ancestral homes. Just listen to Borders. Did we also mention she’s a mother as well?
MATANGI / MAYA / M.I.A in cinemas September 28 (US).
M.I.A instead of Theresa May for the UK! Obama did say he needs more women in politics.
