Matilda Cole Drops Her New Track 'Again'

And shares her inspirations and plans for the year ahead.

POSTED BY ROCHELLE SWANSON

From the pebbled shores of Brighton come the sultry vocals of indie singer-songwriter and rising star, Matilda Cole. Her first EP ‘Milk Teeth’, released last year, defined her distinct coming-of-age songwriting style.

This week she's releasing her new single 'Again', a track born from the vicious circle of an unhealthy relationship. We had a little chat about her songwriting, her inspirations and her plans for the rest of the year.

Hey, Matilda! Who are your favorite songwriters and which artists do you take inspiration from?

Ah so many! At the moment: Sharon Van Etten, Pinegrove and Samia and Patti Smith. I also get a lot of inspiration from literature, and I’ve been on a real Joan Didion kick lately (rip legend), a long with Ocean Vuong, who’s incredible.

Tell us about your earliest memories of music and what motivated you to start writing?

I wrote my first song when I was seven, in the car back from the first concert I ever went to, which was Miley Cyrus! That concert literally changed my life, I knew I would do anything to get myself in her position, so I got started right away.

Do you have any specific methods when you write a song?

Usually I write a prose type piece, and then draw from there lyrically. With producers, we will create an instrumental and then I’ll write melodies and fine tune the lyrics - but on my own I just pick some chords (I only know about five) and write around them. I love musical composition, but writing is the bit I’m most passionate about, so that usually comes first.

And finally - what are your plans for the year ahead?

MORE MUSIC ALWAYS!! I'm writing a lot for other artists which is so fun and great practice, but I’m always writing my own stuff, so more of that.
