Girl Boss Behind Mega Brand Local Heroes On Unicorn Sneakers, Bieber And Being Yourself
Areta’s world screams: “Don’t grow up it’s a trap!” in the best unicorn dancing, rainbow rocking, slogan emblazoned way possible. A true girl boss of glitter-happy glam, Areta is at the helm of the Warsaw based brand, ‘Local Heroes’, which is exploding worldwide, available at Selfridges, Colette, Dolls Kill, and beyond. Fizzy dived into her playful barbie-punk universe to chat on a hyper hero scale.
When and how did you start Local Heroes?
We started in 2012, my friend Karolina Slota, and I. We were just two teenage girls that couldn’t find cute clothes to wear so we decide we’ll find out how and do them ourselves! The first t-shirt we did was the DOING REAL STUFF SUCKS, tee, because that was my blog & life motto, and we sent it to Justin Bieber. Karolina was a huge fan and she found his address on google maps. And guess what? He wore it! The paparazzi pics were EVERYWHERE and suddenly we were this big brand that everyone was talking about, and we were just sitting here, like, what do we do now?
Tell us an amazing fact about you?
I take my socks off together with my pants.
What’s the worst advice somebody gave you?
Somebody said to me: “That’s not what you’re supposed to do.” BULLSH!T. Do whatever you think it’s right for you, and don’t let anyone else decide for you.
Can you give some advice to young peeps who want to grow their own business?
First, do your research. The industry has changed a lot since we started and it’s getting more and more dense ( is that a good word for that ? ). So, instead of copying what everyone else is doing, trust your guts and do whatever you feel is right, for you. I always remind myself: I’d rather regret something I did, than something I didn’t.
The best pair of shoes you have have ever owned, is?
Reebok x Areta, duuh! The most unicorn sneakers ever.
Most favourite place in the world?
California!
If you have an hour to kill, how do you fill it?
Napping. Watching Full House. Cooking something yummy and healthy. Scrolling through instagram to catch up with my friends. Or just laying / sitting and reading, or letting my brain do whatever it needs to be doing.
Most illegal thing you've ever done?
I’d rather not say it out loud!
When did you last throw up?
I rarely drink, so the last time was probably due to food poising or something like that. I think I have only threw up like 3-4 times in my life. Is that weird?
What will your funeral be like?
Outdoors, with cute flowers and colors and what’s most important: happy stuff. I want to to leave good vibes on Earth.
Whoâs your personal hero?
Is it too obvious if I say my mum? I think every parent is a hero. That’s one category. The second one are the people that followed their dreams and ended up doing something good for humanity. It doesn’t have to be on a big scale, even (helping) one person counts.
We say fizzy, you say?
DOING REAL STUFF SUCKS!
