Why Korean Beauty Rubber Masks Are Going Absolutely Viral
At this point, we all know what happens in the Korean beauty world doesn’t stay in the Korean beauty world; it migrates way beyond the small Asian peninsula, and soon enough, all our favorite beauty gurus are giddy over the latest and greatest. The rubber masks? No exception.
If you’ve never heard of rubber masks, allow us to introduce you to Korea’s newest buzzed-about beauty product. This genius formula is basically a sheet mask you build yourself. The mask starts out in a powder form, but with the addition of water, it transforms into thick goo that you smear over you face, allow to dry and then peel off in one giant, rubbery sheet. And yes, it is just as fun to use as it sounds.
The best part? These masks are not only mesmerizing to watch, but they’re also ultra-nourishing, detoxifying and hydrating. While we can’t travel all the way to Seoul to get in on this rubbery fun, brands like Glow Recipe, Soko Glam and Peach & Lilly have created at-home treatment options that are effective and won’t break the bank.
Once you find a mask you want to cover your face in, Glow Recipe’s co-founder Christine Chang has a few tips to mask like a pro, which she recently shared on Instagram:
1. Start with a clean canvas. Cleansed (and exfoliated) skin will be better able to absorb all the nutrients from the rubber mask.
2. Mix briskly. Beat the powder and liquid (or water depending on the type of rubbermask) until powder is dissolved but don't wait too long, otherwise it will start to set before application.
3. Go thick. A dense, even application will be easier to peel off afterwards.
4. Be patient. Wait at least 15 to 20 minutes so that the rubbermask fully congeals, creating that evaporation free barrier for mask ingredients to do their magic. 🗝
5. Afterwards use a cotton pad soaked in toner to remove any remaining bits and then pat in a serum and moisturizer to seal everything in. 💯
And ta-da. You’re left with smooth, clear, glowing skin— as well as the satisfaction of a channeling your inner child with a seriously fun beauty product that’s practically an arts-and-crafts experience.
