The Internet Is Outraged Over Kendall Jenner's Vogue India Cover
"Why not an Indian model when there are so many???"
Kendall Jenner may have an enviable life — full of ad campaigns, jet-setting and risqué Met Gala dresses — but it’s been difficult to be jealous of the model lately. To review: She stared in an uninformed Pepsi ad, was involved with the disastrous Fyre Festival and now, her appearance on Vogue India is the source of some major backlash.
Jenner’s latest controversy is centered around her current Vogue India cover. The model stands tall in a lacey Saint Laurent dress on the front of the publication’s May issue, which marks the 10th anniversary for the magazine.
Although the anniversary issue is meant to “blend international fashion with traditional Indian culture,” according to WWD, there has been a lot of negative reactions about the fact Jenner herself is not Indian.
Critics of the cover model took their opinions to Vogue India’s social media accounts and asked why the magazine couldn’t find an Indian model to celebrate it’s anniversary.
“Why not an Indian model when there are so many???” one Facebook commenter wrote. “This doesn’t create the sense that India has its own beauty and character.”
Another noted the irony: “It’s like Russian models celebrating a French anniversary.”
An Instagrammer user went so far as to suggest, “She didn’t even post these pictures on her Instagram because its Vogue India. And you chose her as the cover model.”
Users also took to Twitter to criticize Vogue India’s decision to place Jenner on the cover:
Kendall has yet to comment on this latest controversy, but judging by her previous silence during times of trouble, we don’t expect she ever will.
