How To Survive Christmas After Going Plant-Based

Never fear, meat substitutes are here!

POSTED BY TENAI PALOMINO

The holidays can be a difficult time for non-meat eaters, especially when many of those around us partake in a carnivorous diet. But as more and more of us turn to a plant-based diet (we got you, planet), more meat-free alternatives are becoming readily available.

The Main Event

The traditional English Christmas Dinner is composed of turkey, roast potatoes, a variety of different veggies, stuffing, gravy and an assortment of condiments including bread sauce and cranberry sauce.

For the centre-piece, brand Linda McCartney (our personal fav) offers a faux beef roast with a delicious red wine glaze, among other “meaty” options, satisfying cravings for something with a bit more substance. Tofurkey also offers a variety of options, or you could even channel your inner chef genius and create something meat-free of your own (try looking up recipes for a home made nut roast).

The Trimmings

Most stuffing is automatically vegan and therefore, automatically a win. As for the roast potatoes, arguably the best part of the whole plate, and other roasted veg, be sure to cook them in non-animal fats so no animals were harmed in the making of this meal (the same goes for the gravy - check out Bisto's onion gravy).

Dessert (fuck yeah)

Thankfully, vegan Christmas pudding and mince pies are now a thing. If you prefer more of an untraditional Christmas dessert, check if it’s gelatine-free for veggies, or dairy-free for vegans. As for the cream and custard, Alpro provide a dairy-free option of the latter, but vegan cream can be hard to come by. Might be time for some DIY…

Merry Christmas and a plant-based New Year!
