How I Layer Clothing Like The Pinterest Girls
A hot weather-friendly guide.
I am obsessed with layering. In my opinion, there's no better indicator of style than being able to pair garments together in a way that just works—a notion I adopted from hours of scrolling Pinterest and realizing that, with a bit of effort, my wardrobe could look like that too. It can be difficult, especially in the hot summer months when the temptation is to wear a T-shirt and shorts every day, but I want to share some combinations I'm fond of that will allow you to show off your flair.

First of all, layered tank tops are a summer must, and bonus points if they're colorful or the one on top has a vibrant design. I love the Y2K vibes you get with this approach and how, depending on the bottoms you pair it with, you can take it in so many directions. With a maxi skirt, it's giving fun surfer chic, but when I wear my reliable frayed denim shorts and lots of necklaces, it's more McBling.
Then, of course, the essential look for any 2000s older brother in an emo band is a T-shirt over a long-sleeve top. I like this look because it allows me to dip my toes into a style that's a bit cooler and grungier than what I'm used to. If you want to channel a bit of Rodrick Heffley (and really, who doesn't?), then a T-shirt over a long-sleeve is a must. Pair it with baggy jeans and a belt chain for maximum effect.
Considering my love for layering, fishnet tops are my holy grail item. I distinctly remember watching Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen and vowing to rock this look, and it's been my uniform for casual-but-slightly-edgy outfits ever since. You can wear the T-shirt above or below the fishnet—layering has no real rules!

We've seen a beautiful array of dress-over-jeans looks in celebration of the Y2K revival, but what about skirts over jeans? This can definitely be a bold look, but the more asymmetrical and ruffled your skirt is, the more the outfit will seem to “make sense.” I like to add multiple belts and skinny scarves to complete the fit. Of all the combinations, this one tends to be the one I get the most compliments on!
The best thing about layering is that there really are no rules. It’s about experimenting with the pieces you already own, finding unexpected combinations, and creating outfits that feel uniquely you.
