How 2000s Athleisure Became Today’s Biggest Trend

Y2K activewear returns with velour tracksuits, yoga pants, bold colors, and nostalgia.

The 2000s are back and showing up in full-on activewear more often. From vibrant colors to velour textures and low-rise silhouettes, the early 2000s gym style is making a comeback, and I’m so here for it. What was once reserved for celebrity paparazzi and Tuscan moms is now back in rotation for any casual day.

One of the biggest resurgences is color. Between brown, pink, and bright orange, they’re replacing the neutral-toned sets that have dominated the market for the last few years. I’ve never been the biggest fan of boring workout gear, so I’m so excited to see color-blocked leggings and bold logos bringing personality back to fitness.

The styles themselves are taking a turn. We’ve seen fold-over pants and cropped zip-up hoodies hit the shelves recently, and honestly, the appeal for me is the balance between comfort and confidence. The appeal of athleisure lies in its versatility, allowing you to head to a workout class and run errands while still looking polished and put together for both.

It’s also important to note that the fabrics themselves are what tie the visual aspect of the look together. Today’s athleisure often relies on performance fabrics like polyester, spandex, and nylon, while the 2000s embraced softer materials such as cotton and velour.

Although today’s versions of 2000s gymwear are designed with more stretch, more supportive fits, and fabrics made for movement, we see brands implement the playful spirit of 25 years ago.
