Halima Aden Becomes The First Hijab-Wearing Model On Vogue's Cover
Aden continues to break ground for Muslims everywhere.
Sometimes the biggest impacts can come from simply being yourself. When model Halima Aden stepped out on Kanye West’s Yeezy runway wearing her hijab a few months ago, she instantly became the fashion industry’s most talked-about new face. After walking the runway, Aden went on to become the first hijab-wearing model to be signed to IMG, and now, she continues to break ground for Muslim women everywhere with her latest Vogue cover.
Vogue Arabia announced via Instagram that the 19-year-old Somali model has been chosen as the 2017 June cover star. Not only does this mark the first hijab-wearing model to cover a Vogue magazine, but it has also started a meaningful conversation for Muslims around the world. Aden’s otherworldly beauty would garner attention anywhere, but by proudly representing Muslim women in the fashion industry, Aden is successfully breaking down walls and redefining what it means to be a model. While its encouraging to see Aden remove religious and racial barriers around the world, she let Vogue know she is more than the garmet she wears, “I want people to see that, yes, I’m wearing a hijab, but I’m also a million other things. I want us to get to a place where we just see women,” explained Aden.
Next month’s Vogue Arabia spread includes an “All Eyes on Halima” editorial in which she wears pieces from Dior and Max Mara and, of course, continues to share her powerful message of self-acceptance. The publication has yet to announce when the issue will hit newsstands, but we expect for it to drop very soon. In the meantime, catch a glimpse of the shoot below.
