Kanye West Cast Hijab-Wearing Model Halima Aden in His Yeezy Show, and She Inspired Us All

The 19-year-old Somali-American model is totally slaying this season.

Another New York Fashion Week, another Yeezy show. We're now into Season 5 of the Adidas-backed brand, and love it or hate it, Kanye and his fashion shows are always a talking point. Yesterday, Kanye rolled out Yeezy's newest collection with a cast of creators and influencers walking the runway, including Playboi Carti, Luka Sabbat, Amina Blue and most notably, model Halima Aden wearing her hijab.

This New York Fashion Week has had no shortage of social and political statements, but Aden may be one of the most inspirational. Born in a refugee camp in Kenya, Aden is a first generation Somali-American. She's also the first hijab-wearing model to be signed to super agency IMG Models.

Aden made her big debut on Yeezy's runway in front of a crowd of fashion icons like Anna Wintour and Kim Kardashian. She walked in a floor-length fur— and naturally, a hijab. Instantly, she became the show's most talked about face.

"I signed with the top modeling agency in the WORLD and still wore my hijab as my crown," Aden wrote on Instagram after the show. "Don't ever change yourself...Change the game."

In a business that prioritizes conformity, Aden has found a way to break down barriers and show women everywhere that the biggest impact can come from simply being yourself.
