How To Spot A “Fake” In Your Friendship Group
Our top-tips for making sure your circle is genuine.
True friends are hard to come by, and sometimes it can be difficult to tell when you have a genuine friend in your midst or whether you need to remove a “fake” from your circle.
Here’s our go-to-guide for spotting a fake friend and how to walk away.
You’re Afraid To Tell Them Good News
You’ve just received the job promotion you’ve been lusting after but you’re reluctant to call your “best friend” up and share the good news. This is a tell-tale sign that the friendship is disingenuous. A true friend celebrates your successes without jealousy or resentment. If you feel like you can’t be honest about your achievements, then it might be prime time to re-evaluate the friendship.
They Drain Your Energy
Spending time with your friends should be part of your down-time. They should uplift you and make you feel good - not drain you. If you feel mentally exhausted after spending time with them, then it’s time to take a step back.
They Live For Drama
We’re all guilty of a bit of gossip, now and again. But if your friend is constantly talking about other people, being negative, or just down-right bitchy, then who’s to say they aren’t saying the same about you when you’re not around? Real friends will want to talk about things that interest you – not other people.
So, if you think it’s time to end a friendship, start by distancing yourself from said “friend” and surround yourself with positive, like-minded people. Put yourself first, respect your boundaries, and don’t hesitate to cut off a toxic friendship that is no longer serving you.
