For Better Or For Worse

Is the possibility of Topshop closing better in the long-run?

POSTED BY LEXIE JAMES

It comes to no surprise that the Arcadia group has gone into administration. With highstreets closing for the endless lockdowns we have all endured, the business has been tough. If the Arcadia group closes all of their stores, staff and laborers will lose their jobs but in the long-run, is that good?

Over the years the Arcadia group and especially Topshop x Beyonce’s range Ivy Park has been known for the unfair treatment of laborers. Not to mention the ongoing effect of fast fashion on the environment. Even with all this damage, Topshop still has higher prices for their clothing. It is this exact reason that the store might get closed down. It cannot keep up with the prices of online outlets like ASOS and PLT.

It goes without saying that Black-Friday really showed PLT’s true colors by selling clothes at 99% off. Which questions how much workings are getting paid. However, if Arcadia’s stores close down, which in hand could strip many highstreets bare, will customers just result shopping online at these fast-fashion outlets?

A possible result of these stores closing is for more room for independent stores to regain the highstreet. Imagine walking through the mall and only seeing ethical, sustainable, and well-priced stores; the dream.
