This week FKA twigs shared the news that she was launching an initiative to help support sex workers who have been negatively impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

On her Instagram page she shared an honest and genuine message with her followers in which she gave the intimate details about why starting this initiative is personal to her and how people can join in.

She wrote: ‘I feel like now is the time for me to step forward, pay respect, and shine a light on the challenges facing sex workers, especially during these uncertain times’ and went on to say ‘today I’m inviting you to join me in helping with cash donations to SWARM, Lysistrata and ELSC. These organisations are providing direct financial support to strippers and sex workers, we’ve kicked off the fund with £10,000.’

It comes as no surprise to those who follow the musicians work that she has an affiliation with the sex industry. A talented dancer herself having learnt moves on the pole off a stripper she met when hostessing, FKA twigs has incorporated pole dancing into a number of her music videos. As well as this, she shared a short film back in July that featured her visit to the first Black strip club in Atlanta, Blue Flame.

Her openness and genuine empathy shared with sex workers who have lost out on essential financial aid that other self-employed creatives have had access to over lock down in the UK is both admirable and important. As she said herself about sex workers ‘many are invisible to financial aid.’

You can join her in getting sex workers seen, and raising the vital funds to support sex workers here.
