Ayabambi That Means 2 Girls, Fetish Style & Cutting Edge Dance Moves

POSTED BY FIZZY STAFF

What do you get when you mix Fetish Cyborg style, cutting edge dance moves, and quite possibly the two coolest girls on earth?

The result: AyaBambi.

Known separately as Aya Sato and Bambi, they are a gifted Japanese couple that have innovated their own dance style, which is insanely impressive. Their unique look and mesmerising form of dance, which they have created through a combination of styles (old way voguing, waacking, and tutting) has acquired them many famous fans, including the likes of Zinc, Snakehips, Madonna (featuring in all of their music videos respectively!) and Alexander Wang, who loved the pair so much that he had to have them appear in his gothic AW 15 campaign.

AyaBambi’s dance style is haunting, yet hypnotic – it gives the illusion of the body undergoing a metamorphosis into machinery. They contort their bodies into ab-human shapes, and combine mechanised movements, performed in perfect synchronisation, with a steadily fixed robotic gaze. Onstage, the girls convey a sense of eerie otherworldliness – which is accentuated by their wacky, individual style that wouldn’t look out of place at a sex show in Amsterdam.

The focus is mainly on the upper body; intricate hand and arm movements precisely executed, while typically, they move their legs to a continual, slower tempo. This is usually set to minimalist music: the sounds of machines infused with strains of techno and dance, which creates the impression of being in an obscure warehouse rave. So influential is the vision of Aya Sato that her expertise has been sought after by choreographers of musicians – you may have noticed that FKA Twigs has a similar dancing style, because of Sato’s work with her choreographer.

AyaBambi are like alien Lolitas – their fresh-faced beauty is painted in stark white, with flashes of bold colour (red eye shadow constructed into cuboid shapes over their eye sockets; dramatic winged eyeliner combined with berry purple lips; no eye make up at all, the innocence of this offset by incongruous black lipstick). The girls have a unique Gothic babydoll style that inverts Japanese Kawaii: floaty white dresses are paired with bondage style harnesses and belts, and while the duo are normally clothed in black, interesting textures and shapes are created by their love of clumpy creeper style shoes and S&M inspired leather. Their style is an inversion of traditional femininity, which retains a raw sexuality (for one of their showcases, the girls clad themselves in black leotards, black fetish style harnesses, fishnet tights, and thigh high black leather boots) and distinct edginess.

The appeal of AyaBambi lies within their authenticity – they are fiercely individual, and their love for each other is made evident through their flawless mirroring of each other and harmonisation onstage. The girls bring a breath of fresh air in a world that seems saturated with imitation, and everything about them is refreshingly modern and liberal – they are even courageously defying Japanese law, which states that gay couples can only have a civil partnership, and are engaged to be properly married.
