Get ready to dive into a world of artistic wonders as the Corey Helford Gallery in downtown Los Angeles presents its highly anticipated Five-Artist Exhibition. This captivating show, featuring aica, Annie Montgomerie, Bob Dob, Sean O’Meallie, and Tada Koiichiro, promises to take you on a journey through a diverse range of artistic expressions. The exhibition will be open for public viewing from July 15th to August 19th, 2023.
One of the highlights of the exhibition is aica's series, titled "Our Fairies of the Scents." Through her enchanting paintings, aica explores the invisible magic of scent and its profound impact on our emotions. Her artwork captures the purity and serenity that contrast with the bustling urban landscapes of today. Each painting serves as a sanctuary, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in a world of unseen wonders and cherished memories evoked by various scents.
Annie Montgomerie, a talented mixed-media artist from the UK, presents her unique sculptures crafted from upcycled children's dolls, vintage buttons, and other materials. Her creations are a fusion of styles, blending elements of horror and twee. Montgomerie's sculptures reflect her love for vintage aesthetics and textiles, inspired by toys of the past, American and African folk-art dolls, and even Victorian taxidermy. Her work explores the complex emotions of childhood, evoking both joy and sadness.
Bob Dob, a renowned painter and illustrator based in Los Angeles, takes us on a journey into the world of the Mouseketeer Army with his series titled "Complementary Colored." Inspired by the rebellious spirit of the Youth International Party's invasion of Disneyland in 1970, Dob's artwork depicts the battle between the Mouseketeer Army and the forces of anarchy. His vibrant and imaginative paintings, influenced by early Disneyland signage and the Mad Hatter's Tea Party ride, offer a glimpse into a world where youthful protagonists navigate the complexities of life.
Sean O’Meallie, an artist, sculptor, and toymaker originally from New Orleans, presents his thought-provoking series titled "Jar of Candy Poppers." O’Meallie's collection comprises 25 handmade wood gun sculptures, each equipped with a spring-loaded bullet. These playful yet poignant pieces comment on the issue of gun violence in the United States, sparking dialogue about the fascination and obsession with firearms in contemporary society.
Tada Koiichiro, an oil painter from Japan, captivates with his delicate technique and introspective portraits. Using soft and monochromatic tones, Koiichiro creates close-up depictions of characters whose eyes reveal the depths of their inner worlds. Drawing inspiration from Japanese artists such as Yoshitomo Nara, his work explores the realms of the subconscious and invites viewers to contemplate the mysteries of human existence.
