Experiment with Balenciaga Fall 2024 Couture

With Demna’s step away from tradition.

POSTED BY EMMA FISHER

When you think of Balenciaga the chances are that you think of experimental fashion - or at least fashion that causes quite the stir and conversation on both social media and in real life. It comes as a shock to no one that for their Couture Fall 2024 collection, creative director Demna experimented with trends not yet witnessed in Couture.

The common motif throughout this collection was teen subculture where goths, skaters, and metal heads were the focus. He called these styles “important influences [on] my fashion vocabulary,” with the Cristóbal Balenciaga codes of midcentury couture evident throughout. Welcome oversized cocoon shapes, three-quarter-length sleeves, and wrap jackets, along with oversized statement hats and models brandishing old-school look numbers.

Elsewhere, plastic bags and aluminum foil, which was upcycled and elevated into one-of-a-kind made-to-measure creations were a talking point. Try a single bolt of black leather fastened with only a safety pin into a seamless gown if you are brave enough. (We hope somebody will be).

The incorporation of material innovations were not the only surprise of the collection as artists, either as collaborators or inspirations, were tied into it. Abdelhak Benallou hand-painted a hoodie and T-shirt, while Ni Hao and Alastair Gibson collaborated on hats. Hand-embroidered butterfly veils were also inspired by the work of artist Yumi Okita, who commonly features the insect in her work.

Even if this is not for you, you have to admire the change of Couture scenery that surprisingly, or not surprisingly, works.
