Emmélin, the Danish-born, London-based musician, has already proven herself an artist who is highly receptive to inspiration, capable of finding incredible stories even in the least obvious places. Last year, we wrote about her single Young Love Is Worse Than Lying, inspired by one of her drawings. Now she returns with a full EP, Running From The Wolves, and an even more intriguing story behind it.

“I was babysitting over a year ago, the sweetest little girl, when she had a night terror. She was hysterically crying and it almost felt like wolves were possessing her,” Emmélin confesses. “As I was comforting her, it reminded me of my own wolves in my head that possess me every day. They tell me how insignificant I am; it feels like they contain me. I saw myself in that little girl and my own inability to take care of myself.”

This is the narrative that Running From The Wolves unfolds: a desperate, and often unsuccessful, attempt to protect yourself from your inner wolves. Musically, wrapped in medieval-esque choirs, strong bass lines and epic outros, it creates a sound that Ethel Cain would probably love to have in her portfolio.

What makes this project a weird girl dream is also its visual representation. Alex Morante created the terrifying five ceramic heads on the cover, each representing one of the wolves. Emmélin then brought them to life for the music video together with costume designer Mio Jue, make-up artist Lucas Miller and hair stylist Charlie Gardner, transforming them into actual characters. They say: face your fears, right?

“My wolves are beauty standards, self-sabotage, fear of ageing, the big city rat race, and patriarchy,” Emmélin shares.
