Is Latex The New Leather?

Latex loving because leather is so last year.

POSTED BY JODI WHELAN

In recent years, latex has seen a notable rise in popularity as a fashion material, and some have considered it a potential alternative to traditional leather. From celebrities leading the way in this revolution, why are we so obsessed? Is it to be considered trendy? Or is it the feeling of being more raunchy and bold with our fashion choices? While leather has long been a staple in the fashion industry, there are several reasons why latex is gaining more attention and could be seen as a contemporary option to leather.

Ethical Considerations:

One of the primary factors contributing to the growing interest in latex is the increasing awareness of ethical and environmental concerns associated with leather production. The leather industry is often criticized for its environmental impact, including deforestation, water pollution, and the use of harmful chemicals. Latex, obtained from the sap of rubber trees, is considered by some to be a more sustainable and environmentally friendly option.

Animal-Friendly Alternative:

Latex provides a cruelty-free alternative to leather. With a rising global consciousness about animal welfare and many finally opening their eyes to the horrors of how materials containing skin or fur are made, consumers are seeking alternatives to traditional leather that do not involve the use of animal products. Latex offers a solution for those who prioritize ethical and animal-friendly choices in their fashion preferences.

Fashion Trends and Aesthetics:

Latex is associated with a sleek, shiny, futuristic aesthetic that resonates with contemporary fashion trends. Celebrities such as Timothée Chalamet, Maya Jama, Julia Fox, and Rita Ora have recently stepped out in latex, proving its popularity. Its high gloss and form-fitting elements lend a modern, edgy look to clothing and accessories. This aesthetic appeal has led to an increased use of latex in fashion, especially in creating statement pieces. Maybe invest in some silicone lubricant to put the clothing on though!

We are incredibly excited to try out this trend. Although it's not new, it's more mainstream than before, when it was only known for fetish-related instances in subculture scenes. More sustainable, animal-friendly, and on-trend, we would choose latex over leather any day of the week! As fashion evolves, it wouldn't surprise us if latex overtakes leather's popularity in the next year. Watch this space.
