Dr Martens Unisex Classics: The Original Non Binary Innovators
2015 has been the year where “gender-fluidity” hit the zeitgeist, with brands increasingly adopting and delivering on collections in response to a clear demand for stylised, non-binary wear. However, way back when, and before we had the current vocabulary to describe it, Dr Martens gave binary the boot and walked all over gender stereotyping, in the now firmly established 8-eye lace up androgynous classics.
What started as the invention of the cushioned-sole shoe – born to deal with a foot injury following a skiing trip took by Munich based “Dr Maertens” and his friend Dr Funck – led to a cultural connection of the coolest proportions, with fellow mavericks, innovators and shoe-makers, the Griggs family of England; and the rest is the stuff of fashion folklore.
From the 1st April 1960, to the present day, ‘DM’ unisex classics have been the staple go-to shoe for a subcultural pick ‘n’ mix of gender unconcerned free thinkers; from punks to two-tone, and everyone in-between who got sole, enjoy some box-fresh shots on us.
