Doublet's Premier Fall 2017 Collection Combines Grunge And Rave Themes With A Dose Of Irony

Masayuki Ino’s premier runway show was one of the most highly anticipated of the Tokyo season, and it did not disappoint. “It was my first show, and I didn’t know anything about making a fashion show. I just put everything I had into it and wanted to have fun,” said Ino, founder and designer of Doublet, in an interview with Vogue.   

Ino certainly did have fun with his introductory collection. In fact, Doublet’s presentation felt more like a party than a traditional runway show. A nineties rave was one of the many elements that inspired Ino’s fall collection. Corresponding with the theme, models’ faces were oiled to look as if they’d just come from dancing all night in a club while blue and green laser beams flashed overhead. The clothes themselves were rave-ready too: looks were punctuated with bright pops of color, platform sneakers bounced across the catwalk and each design had a distinctly sporty, streetwear influence. 

The collection’s overarching message was tongue-in-cheek anti-fashion. In addition to printing garments with words describing them (“underwear,” “knit”), Ino borrowed Nineties corporate logos from companies such as Caterpillar, Mobile and Pepsi and refashioned them to say NYC, Paris and Milan, poking a little fun at the fashion world itself.

Perhaps one of the most memorable elements of the show was the mixture of professional and nonprofessional models who walked the runway. Ino gathered together an extremely diverse group and aimed to show each person’s true self. “It is all about individual character. I don’t care about it being cool,” shared Ino with Vogue. Despite this nonchalant attitude towards his perception (or maybe because of it), Ino is now officially fashion’s crowed cool kid.
